Course Details

The courses I offer follow the unique Learner Driving System of driving tuition.  Each course includes the provision of the Driving Skills Workbook and DVD/Videos which are not available from other companies or shops.

When you take a course each lesson is carefully planned and follows a set programme with clearly defined objectives or ‘targets’ as I prefer to call them, where I use professional training materials and modern training methods to ensure your training is both effective and enjoyable.

Preparing for a driving lesson at home beforehand, using the unique driving skills video programme and workbook will significantly cut down the amount of time normally spent by your instructor at the beginning of each new lesson at the side of the road on a lesson brief. Normally a instructor will take up to 20 minutes or more explaining about the lesson objectives, the road procedures you need to learn and the driving techniques you need to understand. All this needs to be done before you get moving. With the Learner Driving  System all this can in fact be covered by yourself at home, beforehand, by watching the driving skills video and doing a simply quiz in the  driving skills workbook.

The Learner Driving system was orginally designed for intensive training but it can be of equal benefit for those taking weekly lessons. For intensive training to be effective it has to be carefully structured, meticulously planned and expertly delivered - hence the development of the Learner Driving system.

One Week Pass Course
The One Week Pass Course usually starts on Sunday or Monday and finishes on Friday. It is ideal for those who are in a hurry, who could not otherwise find the time. The driving test would usually be organised to take place at the end of the week or during the following week depending on your personal preference. If you want a test at the end of the course you would need to book the course and pass the theory test well in advance of the required start date (i.e. at least one month in advance). However, occasionally short notice driving tests can be arranged.

The in-car training provided is 35 hours on a one pupil to one instructor basis. (This includes 2 hours for attending the driving test). When you add the home study, using the  driving skills videos and workbook, the total duration of this course is around 45 hours.

Residential one week courses are also available at various picturesque locations throughout Lancashire and the Peak District with good accommodation from just £25 per night including breakfast and video facilities. The course materials are provided in advance of the start date so that they can be studied before as well as during the one week course . Please note these courses are very popular and limited in number.

Semi-intensive Pass Course
The Semi-intensive Pass Course is identical in content to the One Week Pass Course above (i.e. 35 hours etc) except the training is spread over two or more weeks to suit you and your instructor’s schedule. This is the most popular and successful form of intensive training . It is designed for people who want to pass the test quickly but at a comfortable pace.

Midway Pass Course

For those who have already learned the basic control skills of driving we have the Midway Pass Course. The in-car training provided is 20 hours on a one pupil to one instructor basis. (This includes 2 hours for attending the driving test). When you add the home study, using the  driving skills videos and workbook, the total duration of this course is around 28 hours.

Test Booster Course
For those who are nearing test standard and who just need a short burst of lessons prior to the test we have the Test Booster Course. It is also ideal for those who have had an attempt at the test some time ago but haven’t had any lessons since. The in-car training is 15 hours on a one pupil to one instructor basis. (This includes 2 hours for attending the driving test). When you add the home study, using the driving skills videos and workbook, the total duration of the course is around 20 hours.

Weekly Lessons
Learning to drive, using our unique, can be spread over several weeks and lessons can be booked individually or in a block at a discount.

Lessons are usually 60 minutes long. Therefore, you would receive a full hour of in-car tuition on each lesson. Unlike in the courses described earlier the LD driving skills videos and workbook are not included in the lesson price, but can be purchased separately.

How many hours will it take?
In the UK people usually take somewhere between 20 and 40 hours to learn to drive.

How many lessons you need will depend upon your motivation and aptitude for driving, whether you have had any relevant past experience, and whether or not you can obtain any supplementary practice between lessons with a relative or friend. The above courses are therefore only a guide to what hours you might need based on the circumstances outlined. It is not a guarantee that you will be ready for the test; this will depend on your individual progress.

The best way to learn to drive
The best way to learn to drive is to take regular lessons spread over a few weeks on a semi-intensive basis. Pupils using the ‘‘one-lesson-a-week’’ approach often take many months to learn to drive. While this helps to spread out the cost you do end up paying more in the long run. This is because you often forget what you have learnt from one week to the next . You end up taking two steps forward and one step back. Consequently, you take many more lessons to pass the test. If you are taking just one -lesson-a-week you would need to increase the hours you need to learn to drive by at least 50%. Therefore if on a semi-intensive basis you need 35 hours to learn to drive it is likely that you would need 45+ hours on a one lesson per week basis. This is the real reason why so many driving instructors encourage their pupils to take just one lesson a week and avoid doing intensive or semi-intensive courses. However, the systems we use do help to overcome this problem because you can use the materials to remind you of what you did during the last lesson while preparing for the next. The materials are also extremely useful if you are able to get any supplementary practice between lessons as they can be used to guide the relative or friend who supervises you. Again this supplementary practice helps to overcome the problem of taking too long and paying more than you need as a consequence of only taking one lesson per week.
